Where people are proud of their past and confident about
their future
Mimico's scenic lakefront, its
turn-of-the-20th century homes, Vimy Ridge Park, the stately
mansions on Lake Shore, and the soon-to-be restored train station
all tell the tale of a deeply-rooted history, of a town that evolved
from a little sawmill settlement at the mouth of Mimico Creek to the
gateway to Toronto's west-end, waterfront neighbourhoods, a place
where work and play matter equally.
Mimico is a vibrant
community that people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and
occupations have chosen to live together in and call home. Mimico
has all the advantages of small-town Ontario - recreational
facilities and a good hockey program, neighbourhood grocers and
trendy boutiques and eateries - all the while being a short commute
from downtown Toronto. Its traditions and its unique atmosphere give
Mimico a flavour of its own, different from any other place in the
City.
The Metropolitan Toronto Region Conservation Authority
has established two wetland habitats in the area - Humber Bay Park
and Mimico Linear Park - both a welcome addition to the Etobicoke
Yacht Club and Humber College Sailing School, as well as ponds for
model boats and fly casting. Mimico and the surrounding area also
hosts several events each year including, the Mimico Tree Lighting
Festival, Party in the Park, Lake Shore Community Festival, Lake
Shore Santa Claus Parade, and the Mimico Festival, with and its
kite-flying contest - all opportunities for the residents of Mimico
to show their community spirit. These events attract thousands of
participants each year.
An area of strong growth, many
development initiatives are currently underway, including Mimico
20/20, Phase 2 of the Mimico Linear Park and restoration of Mimico
Train Station. Recently completed projects in the area include the
much anticipated Mastercard Centre for Hockey Excellence and the
Festival Square at Amos Waites Park.
Friendly hospitality,
community spirit, commerce, the sparkling waters of Lake Ontario,
the old and the new, all come together to provide residents,
businesses and visitors with treasured amenities and comfortable
surroundings.
